Fishmobile...Volkswagen Doubleback Camper

Via Wide Open Spaces:

Volkswagen is changing the mobile camping game with this unique “doubleback” camper that is really more like a mini RV.

The Volkswagen Doubleback Camper is truly a innovation in the mobile camping world. They took the popular VW Transporter van and decked it out to the max, creating a comfortable and surprisingly spacious camper.
Practical Motorhome in the UK got a hold of one of the early Doubleback models to review the camper a few years ago. Although the company that designed them has added and taken away a few things here and there, it is still a pretty cool thing to see.

TAKE ACTION...Trouble in the Bahamas

I'm sure most of you have heard about what is unfolding in the Bahamas right now...but for those of you who haven't:

Via Hatch Outdoors:

Dear Hatch Friends and Customers:

Hatch Outdoors is joining with lodges, guides, small businesses and other booking entities to issue a “call to action” regarding dangerous new fisheries regulations and legislation. This is is being proposed by a small number of short-sighted, anti-foreign guides that aim to regulate fishing access in the Bahamas and actually prohibit foreign-owned fishing lodges throughout the Bahamas.

Please join us in making sure the voices of sportsmen, recreational fishermen and destination anglers are heard. Public comment will only be accepted until Friday, June 26th, so please join us and take action now.

TAKE ACTION:

Please cut and paste the following letter (or write one of your own) and email it to:  fisheries@bahamas.gov.bs

Dear Sir or Madam:

I strongly oppose the proposed fisheries regulations currently being proposed for the Bahamas. The issue of protecting the fisheries resource is not one of ownership but rather one of sound, common-sense stewardship. It is in the best interest of the fishing lodges and outfitting operations - whether they are locally owned or foreign owned - to protect the resource on which their businesses depend. Further, every fishing lodge in the Bahamas provides the country much needed jobs. Please focus your attention on the health and protection of the fisheries and do not attempt to regulate the guides and lodges. The proposed fisheries regulations are quite literally a bad solution in search of a problem that does not exist. The traveling angler has many choices throughout the Caribbean and throughout the world. If the Bahamas passes this legislation and sends the message that destination anglers are not welcome in the Bahamas, then he or she will quite simply take their business elsewhere. Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Maryland Weekly Fishing Report Overview | June 25, 2015

Via MD DNR:

By: Keith Lockwood

Recently I was reading an article where a group was complaining about trash left by fishermen and their campaign to ban fishing from an area very popular with fishermen. I've found myself reflecting on all the years that I have mentored Boy Scouts, young outdoorsmen and my own sons about picking up other people's trash in the outdoors whether it comes from hikers, campers, photographers, fishermen or just visitors to the outdoors. For those who love the outdoors it is hard to understand why someone would discard trash and disgrace something we love dearly. All of us would never do such a thing and many will shake their heads when they see it. I urge everyone to go one step further and pick up other peoples trash, whether it is fishing line, blister packs or those ever popular containers of Canadian Nightcrawlers. Some of the access points we find so valuable are often abused and the abuse does not go unnoticed by others.
The upper bay region has been offering some great fishing opportunities this week for striped bass. Chumming from the Bay Bridge up to Swan Point near Rock Hall has been popular and boats can be seen anchored up at spots at the bridge and sewer pipe, the Dumping Grounds, Podickory Point, Love Point and Swan Point and several places in between. When traditional locations become crowded often a good depth finder can locate suspended fish near steep channel edges and one can find a little elbow room. Chumming and chunking can be very effective on a good tide and as water temperatures hit the 80° mark the early morning hours tend to produce some of the larger fish. There are a lot of throwback sized striped bass in the chum slicks and anglers are urged to keep their lines tight and set hooks immediately when using J style hooks. Using circle hooks is the most ethical choice to use when chumming and drifting cut baits back in a chum slick and helps significantly cut down on deep hooking of fish.
Trolling is a good option in the upper bay region and a mix of swim shads and bucktails in tandem or behind umbrella rigs has been catching a nice grade of striped bass along channel edges and lumps. Spoons are also being used with inline weights and trolled as a single lure to cut down on tangles. Jigging is another good option where suspended fish can be found. There is a lot of bait in the upper bay region in the form of menhaden which of course attracts the attention of striped bass. Jigging near the bridge piers of the Bay Bridge is always a "go to" option and this nice striped bass held up by Matt Home who was on a visit from Reno, Nevada would spark up anyone's day.

Fly Product...Thomas & Thomas Solar

Refined power for the salt. Our fast action, flagship saltwater series.
The culmination of two years of R&D, working with some of the best guides in the Florida Keys and Bahamas, the Solar series sets the standard for saltwater performance. Designed for the rigors of tropical flats fishing, since the Solar's introduction anglers have found it equally at home chasing Northeast stripers and tuna, throwing poppers for peacock bass, and stripping big streamers for giant dorado and browns.
With SOLAR we developed an immensely powerful rod and then reined it back a little so that it is dialed for optimum performance at 45’ to 65’. All the top tournament guides agree that this is the ‘zone’. At these distances accuracy is enhanced and the reaction of the fish is visible. Sure the SOLAR can throw an entire fly line for a ‘Hail Mary’. But it is dialed for the zone, strong enough in the tip to pick up and recast heavily weighted flies at these distances and possessing the butt power to fight the fish close to the strength limits of IGFA tippets. At Thomas & Thomas, we focus not just on creating ‘casting rods’, but on perfecting ‘catching' rods.

Features:
-High modulus natural grey graphite blank

-Unique blank topography for extra durability and shootability

Clearing Line to the Reel

Another great video from Gink & Gasoline on how to clear line to the reel...check it.

A lot of bonefish are broken off in the first few seconds of the fight.
One of the most common problems for new bonefish anglers is managing the whirlwind of fly line created by the fish’s first blistering run. If left to its own devices that line will find something to wrap around. Maybe your real seat or reel handle or even your head. Whatever it finds, these powerful fish will break off immediately when the line comes tight.
It’s a situation that’s easy to avoid, once you know how. Once you strip set on a fish, just separate your hands by at least three feet and let the line slip through your fingers, keeping pressure on the fish, until all of the line is all out. Then you can use the reel to really put some pressure on the fish.

Maryland Weekly Fishing Report Overview | June 18, 2015

Via MD DNR:

By: Keith Lockwood

Many will say summer is made for kids; it is a time when they are out of school, its warm and they can pursue fun interests with family and friends. Any parent or mentor that has taken a young person on their first fishing trip and hopefully a successful one knows the joy of seeing the smiles on their faces with their proud catch. It is all about fun and hopefully a life long journey of having fun fishing and enjoying the outdoors no matter how old they are. The Fisheries Service maintains a website for our young anglerswith all kinds of links to fun adventures such as the Youth Fishing Club, My 1st Fish certificates and fishing rodeo schedules. Be sure to check out the site for your young fisherman or steer them towards it if they are computer savvy already.
Vibrio are bacteria that naturally occur in brackish water like the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries and salt water especially during warm weather. Vibrio infections are relatively rare in Maryland and nationwide. However when Vibrio or other bacteria come in contact with an open wound they can cause serious infections, especially in people with liver disease or weakened immune systems. The following link can offer fishermen and crabbers some safety advice. mde.maryland.gov/vibrio
The upper bay has been a very popular place to fish for striped bass this week as boats can be seen anchored up from the Bay Bridge to Swan Point chumming. The suppliers of menhaden chum must be doing a brisk business since this has been the most popular method of fishing for a couple of weeks now. Traditional locations such as the Bay Bridge Piers, Podickory/ Sandy Point Light, The Dumping Grounds, Love Point and Swan Point have been very popular places to chum or chunk for striped bass. Some of the better catches are being made early in the morning before the sun gets too high in the sky and of course a good tide is essential. Many are reporting that better fish are coming from the back of the slick on the bottom with slightly larger baits. Jim Davis was fishing with a piece of soft crab at Podickory Point when he caught and released this nice striped bass.
