Orvis' Recon Line is Growing

Via Hatch Mag:

"Orvis's new, mid-priced Recon rod series has been garnered with heaps of positive feedback since its announcement last summer. While the Recon is being touted as Helios 2-like in its feel and performance, a fact that surprises few given the Recon is based on the Helios 2's design, the Recon series is built on a unique set of tapers and blanks that use less expensive materials than Orvis's flagship rods. The result, many have noted, is a rod with high-end performance but without the high-end price tag. Late last week, Orvis announced they are expanding the Recon lineup with nine new models, expanding the full lineup to 18 rods."

Flashback Friday...DIY Reel Spooling Station

I've decided to start a new segment called "Flashback Friday", after the popular Hashtag. It will highlight one of our top past posts from all segments. This one is my all-time favorite and in the top 5 of "Most Viewed" posts in TLTFF history...enjoy.

I asked Santa for a line winder or reel spooling station for Christmas but I guess it fell out of the back of his sleigh en route to my place. So I went on a search for a well-priced, well-made one and the cheapest one I found that fit this criteria was about $24.99. I know thats not too much but I knew I could make one cheaper.

I busted out the old graph paper and drew up a few ideas before I finally decided to just head over to Home Depot and kill some time cruising the isles and finding what I thought I needed. Well after and hour in home depot and $14.94 spent, I had what I wanted and headed home. The project overall took me about an hour and half but was pretty fun to make.

So without further adieu, this is how I made my own spooling station for under $15 and how you can too...

Materials List:

30" x 6" board of wood (I cut a board I bought down to these dimensions)
3/16" x 1-1/2" Eye Bolt
2 Matching Nuts for Eye Bolt based on thread count (should come with eye bolt)
4" long 1/4" - 20 Hex Bolt
1/4" - 20 Nylon Lock Nut
1/4" - 20 Wing Nut
1/4" Washer
4 1-1/2" Corner Brackets
14 Small 1/4" Long Screws (any will do, they are to secure the brackets)
1" Pipe Couplings
6 2" Drywall Screws
- Box of Felt Furniture Feet (optional)
- 6" of 3/4" Wood Dowel
- Hammer
- Drill
- 3/4" Drill Bit
- 1/4" Drill Bit
- Screwdriver
- Tape Measure

Dan Decibel's "The Raffle"

"This past December 2014, Skinny Water Culture hosted their annual Christmas Party. Tons of people gave donations such as toys, money, and canned goods for those in need of help. There was a raffle held with some great prices, such as fishing charters, fishing gear and even a small boat/paddleboard. Our raffle was a little different, we decided to make a video about "A Day in the Life" with Jason Fernandez and myself. One lucky winner, Mark Vedder, from Tampa Bay area, came out and hung out for 2 days and we recorded the whole thing. We had tons of fun filming this as always, I hope you guys like it, ENJOY!!"

Casting For Recovery Fly Rod Raffle

For those of you who haven't met Zeb, know that first off, he's just a great guy. I've wanted to add one of his rods to my arsenal for years now but due to his full schedule and my lack of $$, it hasn't happened...yet. I've had the privilege of knowing Zeb for a few years now, and what you see here is what you get, a stand up guy looking out for the sport and some of the awesome causes behind it.

An example of one of those causes is Casting for Recovery. CfR is an organization with "the mission of Casting for Recovery is to enhance the quality of life of women with breast cancer through a unique program that combines breast cancer education and peer support with the therapeutic sport of fly fishing. The retreats offer opportunities for women to find inspiration, discover renewed energy for life and experience healing connections with other women and nature. CfR’s retreats are open to breast cancer survivors of all ages, in all stages of treatment and recovery and are free to participants."

I've personally seen this organization act as a true foundation for healing. Its amazing what this sport can do when put into the right hands. With most of us affected indirectly by this terrible disease, I think CfR can resonate with almost all of us. Check out what Zeb and CfR of the Mid-Atlantic is doing...

Maryland Weekly Fishing Report Overview | February 12, 2015

Via MD DNR:

By: Keith Lockwood

Winter weather is often a time for most fishermen to spend time indoors paging through fishing catalogs, attending outdoor shows or preparing their equipment for anticipated fishing seasons in Maryland or heading to more southern latitudes for a fishing fix. There is a group though that sees opportunity in several species of fish that are active in Maryland's cold water during the winter. The following is a tale of two fishermen who knew what they were after and made the necessary preparations to put them in position to take advantage of the opportunity if luck gave them a chance.
Tautog fishing has been good on the wreck and reef sites located off Ocean City since the season opened on January 1st. More than a few out of state anglers have been coming to Ocean City in the colder months for years now and a group of fishing buddies from New York came prepared on January 2nd to fish for tautog on an Ocean City charter boat. Ken Westerfeld had a dream to catch a 20 lb. tautog one day and he figured the best place to make that dream come true was off Ocean City during the winter months. Ken surpassed his dream by catching a 28.8 lb massive tautog that established a new state record for Maryland and a pending all tackle world record.
